The Marvellous Stairway

We must long for real change, to get out of this boring routine, of this purely mechanical tiring life...

What we must first clearly understand is that each one of us, whether we be bourgeois or proletarian, wealthy or middle class, rich or impoverished, is in fact at one or another Level of Being...

The 'Level of Being' of the drunkard is different from that of the abstemious, and that of the prostitute is very different from that of the maiden. What we are saying is irrefutable, uncontradictable...

On reaching this point in our chapter, there is no harm in imagining a stairway that ascends vertically from beneath us with numerous steps...

Undoubtedly, we find ourselves on one of these steps. On the steps below will be people worse than us; on the steps above will be people better than us...

On this extraordinary Vertical, on this marvellous stairway, we can certainly find all the Levels of Being...each person is different and no one can refute this...

Indubitably, we are not talking about ugly or pretty faces; neither are we dealing with the question of age. There are young and old people, elderly people close to death and newborn children...

The question of time and years, that of being born, growing, developing, marrying, reproducing, aging and dying is exclusively of the Horizontal...

On the 'Marvellous Stairway', on the Vertical, the concept of time does not apply. On the rungs of such a ladder we find only 'Levels of Being'...

The mechanical hope of people serves no purpose, they think that with time things will get better. Our grandfathers and great-grandfathers thought this way. The facts have come to show just the opposite...

The 'Level of Being' is what matters and this is Vertical. We are on one rung, but we can climb up to another rung...

The 'Marvellous Stairway', which we are talking about and which refers to the different "Levels of Being", has nothing to do with linear time...

A higher 'Level of Being' is immediately above us from instant to instant...

It is not in any remote horizontal future, but here and now, within ourselves, on the Vertical...

It is obvious, and anybody can understand it, that the two lines – Horizontal and Vertical – meet, from moment to moment, in our psychological interior and form a cross...

The personality develops and unfolds on the Horizontal line of life. It is born and dies within its linear time, it is transitory. There is no tomorrow for the personality of the deceased; personality it is not the Being...

The Levels of Being, the Being itself, does not belong to the realm of time, it has nothing to do with the Horizontal line, it is within ourselves.Now, on the Vertical...

It would be manifestly absurd to search for our own Being outside of ourselves...

It is useful to establish the following corollary: titles, grades, promotions, etc., in the external physical world, cannot in any way generate authentic exaltation, revaluation of the Being or passage to a superior step on the 'Levels of Being'...
