Questions about the Gnostic Knowledge

But how it is possible to do that?

By studying and practicing the Gnosis. The Gnosis has the didactic and dialectic fundamentals to achieve the awakening of Consciousness in every human being.

But is then the Gnosis a scientific or a somewhat religious study?

The Gnosis is eminently scientific because its practices are demonstrable. The field of study of Gnosis is man himself. Therefore, we can infer that it is an anthropocentric study, because everything leads to transforming the ordinary man into a superior one. The Gnosis is not a religion, but its studies allow a full understanding of any religious doctrine.

Could you define the Gnosis for me in general terms?

"‘It's good to know that etymologically the word “Gnosis” comes from Greek and it means “knowledge”; however, it is clear that we are not talking about ordinary knowledge. The Gnosis refers to a higher Wisdom that is transcendental for humans. This universal and timeless knowledge, wherefrom the great theological, philosophical, artistic and symbolic similarity of the great civilizations of the past has emerged, bearing testimony that all have drunk from the same original source.’

‘The JANA, YANA, GHANA or GNOSIS is the science of JANO, or the science of ENOICHON or of the soothsayer. The word JINA, wherefrom the term GNOSIS comes, is merely the Spanish form of that word; its real writing derives from Parsee and Arabic, and it is not JINA, but DJIN or DJINN, these forms being used by many authors.’

But, I heard that Gnosis is something like a heretical doctrine that emerged from the bosom of primitive Christianity. Is this true?

You may have read statements like that because there are a few works published by religious institutions which seek to intentionally discredit Gnosis and the Gnostics. But such claims do not have a dialectic base. The Gnosis already existed before the advent of Christianity and of Jesus of Nazareth. However, you should know that, for example: : ‘The Nazarenes were known as Baptists, Sabeans and Christians of Saint John. Their belief was that the Messiah was not the son of God, but simply a prophet who wanted to follow John.’

Origen (one of the fathers of the Christian church), in his Vol. II, page 150, notes that:

: ‘There are some who say of John that he was the anointed (the Christos).’

‘When the metaphysical conceptions of the Gnostics, who saw Jesus as the Logos and the anointed, began to gain ground, the early Christians separated from the Nazarenes, who accused Jesus of distorting the doctrines of John and of changing the baptism in the Jordan for another one‘

((This is taken textually from Codex Nazarenus, II, page 109).

Could you elaborate a little more on the issue of Consciousness as an instrument to investigate everything?

Certainly, my friend, the problems of humanity exist because man is devoid of the power of Consciousness. In the previous lines, we have already defined Consciousness scientifically and we have said that it is the psychological ability to seize or capture all external and internal phenomena inherent in ourselves. It is scientifically proven that the contemporary man has only about three per cent of active Consciousness as opposed to a ninety-seven per cent of inactive Consciousness within himself. This naturally renders many of our acts unconscious and often incoherent. Undoubtedly, this causes confusion, social shocks, traumas of all kinds, anguish, anxieties, stress, etc. The worst of all this is that the rest of the inactive Consciousness is a prisoner of the energy forces that enslave it and subject to its whims.

How can I leave that circle of people?

By awakening your Consciousness.

So, Gnosis is a pre-Christian and Christian knowledge at the same time?

‘To speak frankly and unequivocally, we say: Gnosis is a very natural function of Conscience; a perennial and universal philosophy.'.

Undoubtedly, GNOSIS is the illuminated knowledge of the divine mysteries reserved for an elite (people eager to learn about the mysteries of life and death). The word “Gnosticism” holds within its grammatical structure the idea of systems or currents dedicated to the study of Gnosis.

"‘This Gnosticism involves a consistent, clear and precise series of fundamental elements, verifiable through the direct mystical experience, for example:

  1. A) The curse, from the scientific and philosophical perspective;
  2. B) The Adam and Eve of the Hebrew Genesis;
  3. C) The original sin and the exit from Paradise;
  4. D) The mystery of Lucifer;
  5. E) The death of the “Myself”;
  6. F) The creative powers;
  7. G) The essence of the Salvator Salvandus;
  8. H) The sexual mysteries;
  9. I) The Inner Christ;
  10. J) The Igneous Serpent of our magical powers;
  11. K) The descent into Hell;
  12. L) The return to Eden.
Only the Gnostic doctrines involving the ontological, theological and anthropological fundamentals, as quoted above, are part of the authentic Gnosticism.’

On the other hand, there is an implicit pre-Christian Gnosis in the philosophical and mystical knowledge of the peoples of the past. Therefore we say that ‘the Mexican codexes, Egyptian papyruses, Assyrian tablets, Dead Sea scrolls, strange parchments, as well as ancient temples, sacred monoliths, old hieroglyphics, pyramids, millenary tombs, and so on, offer at their symbolic depth a Gnostic meaning that definitely escapes literal interpretation and that has never had an explanatory value of a solely intellectual nature.’

‘The speculative rationalism of the modern anthropologists and historians, instead of enriching the language, impoverishes it, since the Gnostic stories, written or allegorized in any form of art, always orient themselves towards the inward BEING of the human person. And it is in that extremely interesting semi-philosophical and semi-mythological language of the Gnosis, where a series of extraordinary invariants are presented, symbols with an esoteric base that silently speak to the Conscience.‘

‘We have investigated this in the Chinese sources, in the Sanskrit works in India, in the old Tibetan manuscripts. We have concerned ourselves with the study of the archaeological pieces, we have investigated many codices in depth, we have analyzed the wisdom of the ancient civilizations, we have carried out comparative studies between Mexico, Egypt, India, Tibet, Greece, etc.; and we reached the conclusion that the universal wisdom is always the same, only its aspects change, according to the peoples, the nations and the languages.‘

‘While it is true that in any Gnostic system we must take into account its Eastern Hellenistic elements, including Persia, Mesopotamia, Syria, India, Palestine, Egypt, etc., we should never ignore the Gnostic principles that are noticeable in the Indo-American sublime religious cults of the Nahuas, Toltecs, Aztecs, Zapotecs, Maya, Chibchas, Incas, Quechuas, and so on.’

Then, what is Consciousness?

From a Gnostic point of view, Consciousness could be defined as follows: ‘It is the faculty to apprehend all external and internal phenomena that relate to us.

What is that? Does it have anything to do with the qualms of conscience?

Consciousness has nothing to do with what we call qualms of Conscience. The latter is one of the functions of Consciousness, but Consciousness is a bit more than that.

What do you mean by that?

That people, while they are alive, do not know how to live because they are victims of circumstances. Everything happens to them, now something good, then something bad. They are not able to create new circumstances. They do not know why they suffer, why they get sick, why they are born, why they die, and so on, and so forth.
